28 Jul 2020 14:12

On 17 July 2020, the Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted a resolution on the “Fifteenth anniversary of the responsibility to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity, as enshrined in the 2005 World Summit Outcome” by a vote of 32 in favour, 1 against and 14 abstentions. The resolution was co-sponsored by different states, including GAAMAC Steering Group members Switzerland and Costa Rica.

This is the first HRC resolution entirely on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). In the resolution, the Council decided to convene an intersessional panel discussion on the exchange of best practices on strengthening national policies and strategies to implement the responsibility to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity through national mechanisms and other stakeholders.
