GAAMAC Africa Working Group meets online
On 9 June 2020, members of the GAAMAC Africa Working Group (AWG), an initiative created in 2016 during the GAAMAC II global meeting in Manila, Philippines, met online to discuss the next steps of their collaboration on strengthening atrocity prevention in the African region. The meeting gathered up to 15 participants of different African countries representing both CSOs and states.
Among the different items addressed was the dissemination of the Manual on Best Practices for the Establishment and Management of National Mechanisms for Genocide and Mass Atrocities Prevention. The group discussed past successes and challenges, as well as explored new ideas and opportunities for follow-up mechanisms to the manual, such as developing training, strengthening collaboration with stakeholders and developing new tools and materials for a broader public. In its next phase, the manual will be disseminated in Ghana, Nigeria and DRC with an emphasis on virtual collaboration due to COVID-19.
“I can see that there is a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm; let’s not give up and let’s keep up the momentum”, said AWG Patron Ambassador Liberata Mulamula as she concluded the meeting. The Africa Working Group and its committees will continue to meet virtually on a regular basis to discuss the implementation of its new action plan.
