Focus on 2020: Opportunities for the twentieth anniversary of Resolution 1325

The women, peace and security (WPS) agenda has tremendous potential to transform the way gender is considered across international peace and security policy. Unfortunately, the UN Security Council largely lacks WPS analysis and recommendations. This paper by the International Peace Institute (IPI), identifies opportunities for the twentieth anniversary of the WPS agenda in 2020:

    • Use creative mechanisms to increase women’s participation
    • Leverage the tools of the UN Security Council
    • Significantly strengthen accountability
    • Move the focus to the field
    • Increase financing
