Independent Assessment of the Human Rights Impact of Facebook in Myanmar

6 Nov 2018 14:32

Facebook has responded to an independent assessment of its human rights impact in Myanmar, which it had mandated and which was carried out by Business for Social Responsibility (BSR). The assessment concludes that prior to 2018, Facebook was not doing enough to help prevent the fomentation of division and incitement of offline violence in Maynmar. This year, Facebook has heavily invested in people, technology and partnerships, which are on the way to be the right corrective actions.

The BSR assessment recommends further action in five areas:

  1. Governance of human rights
  2. Community standards enforcement
  3. Engagement, trust and transparency
  4. System-wide change
  5. Risk mitigation and opportunity enhancement
