United Nations General Assembly formally discusses Responsibility to Protect (R2P)

On 25 June 2018, the United Nations General Assembly for the first time formally discussed the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) as part of the agenda of its 72nd session.

Read here the remarks by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in which he lauded the efforts of networks of states as a valuable tool to develop partnerships, mechanisms and good practices, highlighting GAAMAC and the Global Network of R2P Focal Points.

Guterres further implored states to protect their populations from atrocities, calling attention to his latest report on R2P in which he proposes several measures states can take to strengthen their prevention capacities.
