About the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC)

GAAMAC’s mission is to support states that engage in the development of national architectures for the prevention of atrocities (genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing).

GAAMAC is a community of commitment composed of states, civil society and academic institutions that pledges to prevent atrocities by establishing national prevention mechanisms and policies. Since its inception in 2013, GAAMAC has grown into a well-respected convener, which enables its diverse worldwide constituency to engage in frank and often difficult discussions about sensitive topics. 

GAAMAC offers a trusted space to talk about real issues: A space to share good practices, to jointly learn from successes and failures without pointing fingers and to look instead for concrete and feasible solutions. GAAMAC is a place to celebrate small steps and victories together.

GAAMAC is led by a Steering Group (SG) which is composed by states and civil society organizations representatives, its members are also actively engaged in GAAMAC initiatives.

To support GAAMAC in operationalizing its mandate, the GAAMAC Support Office was established in 2017. This small, light and flexible Office is based in International Geneva.

Position

GAAMAC is looking for a Communications Officer to develop, support and promote GAAMAC’s communications and outreach goals, including message development, social media content creation and media outreach. Outreach and community collaboration are key components of the position. 

The successful Communications Officer is self-motivated, has strong analytical writing and verbal communications skills, diplomatic skills and is used to working in a diverse political and multicultural environment and has strong attention to detail. He/she is fluent in English and French; an additional UN language is welcome. He/she has experience in the issues related to prevention (among others, human rights, international justice, migration, early warning systems), and is committed to staying abreast of new developments in the field. This strong team player will work in Geneva with a small dynamic and very motivated team, in direct collaboration with the Managing Coordinator based in New York.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Communications: drafting and editing
    • Contribute to and spearhead the implementation of GAAMAC’s communication strategy;
    • Copy edit, format documents in line with GAAMAC’s language and branding;
    • Under the supervision of the Managing Coordinator coordinate and perform specific communication tasks:
      • edit communication material related to GAAMAC events and GAAMAC IV global meeting: draft;
      • draft, design and distribute the GAAMAC Newsletter, foster collaboration with the external partners for the production of videos and other joint projects and events, prepare the dissemination of videos as well as any other communications support;
    • Work closely with the Managing Coordinator and draft communications material to complement and enhance fundraising efforts.
    • Perform any communication and public relations duties as required.
  • Publications
    • Collect and research news, events, updates, reports and research related to the prevention of atrocities from around the world:
      • Particularly regarding partners’ activities relevant to atrocity prevention to be showcased on calendar of events, newsletters
    • Develop content of GAAMAC’s Newsletter keeping a cultural, political, geographical and gender-based balance;
    • Oversee the development and maintenance of a curated library and resource center showcasing toolkits, practical guides, manuals and other material from the GAAMAC community. The curated library and resource center are and will remain open to the public, available to the whole GAAMAC’s community and the general public.
  • Website content and social media management
    • Contribute to the GAAMAC website (English and French) together with the Web Administrator, including the creation of the French version of the website;
    • Coordinate and manage the actualization of the website content, the online event platform, the Steering Group platform and the Prevention Community Virtual House platform (text, databases, information, agenda, spotlights, partner information, etc.);
    • Contribute to the planning and coordination of new content, functionality and feature development of the Prevention Community Virtual House platform;
    • Strong familiarity with key platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., is required;
    • Ensure consistency and edit written GAAMAC Support Office outputs;
    • Support online learning opportunities for partners, including such things as webinars, GAAMAC’s resource center and other digital tools.
  • Outreach and public relations
    • Develop and disseminate outreach materials;
    • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, bloggers, communications officers in permanent missions, the UN and other NGOs in international Geneva (and other locations);
    • Support outreach efforts, in particular formulate and implement a concept on how to actively engage with GAAMAC partners in the Support Office’s communication strategy;
    • Process partnership requests and liaise with existing and potential new partners.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of proven experience in communications strategy development and implementation, public events
  • Ability to prioritize workload on multiple projects and events simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Team player
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Sound working knowledge of social media technology
  • Basic knowledge of HTML/coding
  • Skill in photoshop, InDesign and other software; website CMS (Word Press)
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills and ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences
  • Knowledge of and keen interest in atrocity prevention, transitional justice, human rights or similar fields
  • Fluency in English and French, knowledge of another UN language is an additional asset.
  • Bachelors’ degree (or similar level, notably through experience) in communications, journalism, public relations or related field.

  • The contract is for 1 year, until December 31, 2020 with the possibility to extend it based on performance and available funding.
