Archbishop of Canterbury apologises for 1919 massacre at Amritsar

The archbishop of Canterbury (United Kingdom) has apologised “in the name of Christ” for the 1919 massacre at Amritsar (India), when hundreds of people were shot dead by British forces. He said “I recognise the sins of my British colonial history, the ideology that too often subjugated and dehumanised other races and cultures … We have a great responsibility to not just lament this horrific massacre but most importantly to learn from it in a way that changes our actions.”  UK politicians have recognized the killings but have stopped short of apologising for the massacre.
