An Integrated Approach to Prevention: The Links between Prevention, the 2030 Agenda, and Sustaining Peace

30 Jan 2018

This briefing paper by the Centre on International Cooperation (CIC) makes the case for an integrated approach to prevention. It examines the various forms of prevention the United Nations currently uses and proposes a new paradigm for prevention on three levels: universal prevention, "at risk" prevention and ongoing crisis prevention. Regarding universal prevention, the briefing argues that the 2030 Agenda and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provide adequate frameworks, while the sustaining peace resolutions provide targeted prevention for countries at risk of violent conflict, and other frameworks such as the Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism provide prevention for specific threats.
